Some people, who may not be very familiar with the Fediverse, often claim that it is just a copycat. I often find myself pondering, “What exactly is the Fediverse supposed to be imitating?”

Which major social media company actually made an effort to decentralize and federate social media before the Fediverse proved the viability of such a concept?

Neither BlueSky nor Meta seemed to care about decentralized social media until millions of people joined the Fediverse. In fact, many individuals in the social media landscape simply dismissed the idea of decentralization. I can personally vouch for this, as I have pitched the concept to a few of them numerous times over the years and was consistently turned away.

The Fediverse is not a replica, but rather a true trailblazer. We are all early adopters of this remarkable technology.

With more than one billion posts from nearly 13.5 million accounts across 25.6K active instances, I wonder who can conclude that ActivityPub based Fediverse can imitate an existing software infrastructure that connects people.
