I know there’s a lot to hate about cars, but isn’t the reason they’re so big now way better safety?

@volpeon I read a study a couple of months ago (I wish I could find back the link of it) basically saying that SUVs are safer for the driver, but they end up killing people more often if they hit a pedestrian, compared to smaller cars. Which makes sense ofc, and does follow your point, but well, SUVs kill the most

@volpeon maybe for the people on the inside but definitely not for people on the outside

@volpeon they're getting worse saftey wise. If you have crash and it rolls on the roof you are dead inside, because they're not made more sturdy, Just heavy and squish together everything on the inside.

Notjustbikes made a video about it.

Just want to add that there’s certainly a limit when it gets unreasonable. American trucks look absolutely insane to me

@blumlaut @volpeon For the hood airbag to work, however, the hood needs to be low enough for the pedestrian to fall onto the hood, which kind of rules out large car designs like the ones you see in the us

@volpeon @blumlaut @charlotte not having them here is a tiny stretch. I saw a total of like two earlier this year
