I'm over here wondering if one day, will have its breakout moment like where hundreds of thousands of people try to join Matrix homeservers over like a two-month period. I expect it will, but it will probably take a deeply unpopular move, like Meta deciding to charge for WhatsApp or to limit it in some horrible way.

The probability of Meta deciding to charge for WhatsApp or to limit it in some horrible way is zero.

However, Simplex is an interesting alternative.

@srijit @smallcircles Yeah, they probably won't charge for it directly, but they will want to maximize its revenue somehow. Think slowly turning WhatsApp into a lame TikTok competitor. It might start with status updates, using an algorithm to show you those status updates, community recommendations, algorithmic ranking of messages ETC.

Your thoughts may be aligned with Meta's objectives. Even if Meta is already doing something partially now, it will not matter for all practical purposes, at least, in India till Meta actually charges money from users.

@srijit @smallcircles Yup, I agree. I think the more interesting/practical use case for is to be a bridge for the various messaging services out there. This will hopefully be helped along by upcoming E.U legislation that mandates interoperability. Also: it's unfortunate that even open source projects are just using Discord for their developer chat due to it being an information black hole.
