When can one expect an independent web (browser) based desktop (Windows and Linux) SimpleX app?

“desktop - this year!”

Sounds good. Please ensure that the desktop app of SimpleX is not hardwired to the mobile app like that of WhatsApp.

@srijit@akko.chir.rs @srijit@mas.to this is easier said than done :) we are still considering the design, and it will be several months before we decide, but it is more likely that desktop will have two supported options: 1) standalone client 2) client to mobile acting as a server. It is not likely that we will be implementing a full device sync at this stage. I've not seen a single messenger that did not make some questionable security trade offs to achieve full sync.

Your observation is very interesting. Can you please share more details regarding this observation? Otherwise, you may also share any available web link elaborating this aspect.

@srijit@akko.chir.rs @srijit@mas.to I need to find what I read about the compromises WhatsApp had to make; Session changes are even more radical - to achieve device sync they simply dropped industry-standard double ratchet, with perfect forward secrecy and break-in recovery (aka post-compromise security). Full sync, even when only one device can be active at a time, is a sufficiently hard problem. Active-active device cluster across badly connected mobile devices is a very hard problem.
