I kinda wish I could do exams on typewriter or sth because writing by hand fucking sucks
@charlotte I mean, aside from the hilarious looks of your peers, what prevents you from bringing in a typewriter in class?
Proceeds to bring in an electric typewriter with a 2048-character memory
@charlotte At my school I remember you were allowed to type exams on a school laptop without internet if you had a disability that prevented you from writing by hand.
@charlotte How hard is it for you to write by hand? If you have a condition like dyslexia or dyspraxia, many schools might allow you to type on a computer for exams
@SuperDicq i can write by hand, it just starts hurting after a while and itās hard to read. i think i could figure out something with the uni but i went through 12 years of school without it and so a few exams that require hardwriting for some reason isnāt that much of an issue.
@charlotte I akso remember that for me during highschool handwriting didnāt hurt at all because I was used to handwriting everything. Then at uni I stopped handwriting completely because we could use computers in class now.
In my final year of uni I had an exam that was handwriting only and it was pretty bad because during the exam I realised I hadnāt touched a pen at all for about 2 years and I kinda forgot how to do it.
@charlotte @SuperDicq If writing by hand hurts that could be a sign of dyspraxia. I donāt know but Iāve been diagnosed with it when I was young and I have the same thing: really bad handwriting and it can hurt after a while.
Are there other motor skills you have trouble with? Like using knifes and forks, catching balls, swimming. Do you have trouble distinguishing left from right.
@iro_miya @charlotte My handwriting was pretty bad as well, but my main issue was that I learned how to use a computer before I learned how to write.
Moving a computer mouse and also drawing you (are supposed to) do by moving the mouse/pen using your arm and not using your wrist. Handwriting however, you are supposed to do using your wrist.
I was handwriting like I was moving a computer mouse so it really sucked and I had to take extracurricular classes in elementary school to āfixā my handwriting skills just to never use handwriting ever again after I got out of school.
@charlotte @SuperDicq o I see
Well itās great that you got to write on laptop in uni, itās really sad that high and middle schools arenāt so up to speedā¦ I also donāt think Iāve ever been presented with the option to use a laptop until uni.
I feel like the mentality, all the way before uni, is that if you have trouble handwriting, thatās a skill issue and itās up to you to do more effort. Itās only when you get to uni that theyāre like āoh now that youāre an adult it has to be a handicapā. Thatās really frustrating.
A mechanical writing machine would be dope though š I actually remember seeing a gif of someone using one in a classroom setting, supposedly also because they couldnāt bring a laptop.
@SuperDicq @charlotte Thatās a really interesting issue
@iro_miya @SuperDicq in high school my parents and i were actually looking if i could use a laptop at school but that didnāt go anywhere. i bought a laptop specifically for university and itās been great
@SuperDicq @iro_miya I also kind of learned how to type before learning reading proper (we had an unused dos (later win98) pc standing around and i could play on it), but learning to write wasnāt that difficult (it just didnāt look good)
@charlotte @SuperDicq Thatās awesome that you finally got the accomodations you needed ā„ļø
I studied in IT, my uni was quite pro-laptop so I didnāt really need permission. It was also really great for me too.
@iro_miya @charlotte I studied software engineering in uni and there were already at the point that instead of no laptops you were actually required to have a laptop with you at all times.
@SuperDicq @iro_miya there is one professor in my uni that insisted on handwritten at-home exams. the funniest part is that there was no supervision so you could print it out (or open it in krita on a tablet), work on it for 3 hours hours (this was a 90 minute exam!) and then send it to the prof via email
@SuperDicq @iro_miya he claimed it was to cut down on cheating but guess what! in those 3 hours someone who is likely going to be great at the exam could have done the exam in full, then send the solutions to other students and have them copy the results (changing some thing so that itās not obvious)
@charlotte @SuperDicq Adament on handwriting, lax on everything else š„“
@iro_miya @SuperDicq he also didnāt even validate your handwriting, so you could have just had someone else take the exam for you
@charlotte @iro_miya Iāve cheated my way through highschool.
Mostly by stealing answersheets from teacher computers.
Itās amazing how many teachers donāt even lock their classrooms during breaks and then also keep their computers unlocked and also keep their encrypted USBs mounted.
@charlotte @SuperDicq also sorry for no image descs but theyāre broken on Milktea, you canāt add them for some reason
@charlotte @iro_miya Youāll only have to do this once and youāll have all the answers for all the tests of the entire year.
@SuperDicq @iro_miya the only time i cheated in school, i still got it wrong. allowed people next to me to copy my results if they wanted to ofc
@charlotte @iro_miya The only subjects that I didnāt try to cheat on were subjects that I didnāt need to study for anyway, such as math or english.
@SuperDicq @iro_miya like lmao the maths teacher was so clueless when the person next to me got a 2 in maths (despite having a bonus due to dyscalculia)
@charlotte @SuperDicq In my school we would rarely straight up pass answers, but weād often go on Discord VC to do the exams together, essentially passing answersā¦ but orally š (this was during the COVID pandemic and they were online)
@iro_miya @charlotte Oh yeah cheating during online exams was a piece of cake, no easier way to cheat. I was talking about my highschool days way before this.
@iro_miya @SuperDicq in my personal experience uni exams arenāt even all that difficult, i managed to cram half a semester worth of stats classes into like 1 day but that might just have been me
@charlotte @iro_miya Last day? I have often crammed things an hour before the exam.
I remember a teacher once said āDonāt try to cram all this before the exam, or you will not remember it long termā and my immediate thought being āWait so if I cram I donāt have to remember this? Cool, letās do thatā
@SuperDicq @iro_miya well it was more like ājust make sure i know how this worksā and work through the sample exam and it worked. couldnāt attend most classes this semester and forgot about the exam until literally the day before the first one. fun
@charlotte @iro_miya And thatās how you get me who had French class for 3 years and canāt even speak a basic sentence.
@SuperDicq @iro_miya i think i had 5 years of french in high school and 2 in primary school and can maybe read some very simple french. also my brain just randomly inserted japanese words into my french vocab so thatās fun
@SuperDicq @charlotte There was this communication class that I crammed the night before the exam, I wrote a summary of all the stuff and shared with my class, so some people were able to cram it an hour before thanks to that.
This was as thanks for the time I arrived late to a class and said there were bus delays, and everyone said it was true, even though it wasnāt. Real moment of solidarity.
@iro_miya @SuperDicq they luckily donāt take attendance here. either you are there or youāre not lol
@charlotte @iro_miya I can understand fluent German like 95% of the time, but I can barely speak it because I never even bothered learning your grammar.
I can read almost all Japanese that isnāt kanji, but the only Japanese vocabulary that I know are words related to my interests and hobbies.
@charlotte @SuperDicq My school was strict about attendance, you could only miss class three times a semester, multiple classes missed consecutively in one morning or afternoon counted as one though.
Many teachers did feel this was excessive.
@iro_miya @SuperDicq it is excessive. here, in principle, anyone can come to any class whenever they happen, even if you donāt take that class (you just need to be a student)
@charlotte @SuperDicq Yeah that makes sense, and I believe most schools in France are like that
@iro_miya @charlotte In Netherlands we have very strict minimum hour requirements for highschool students, as in like you actually have to clock in and out at the library and stuff to register your hours. And if you miss a few hours without a valid reason they will send a civil servant to your house to go talk to your parents, itās absolutely insane.
And then you go to uni and thereās suddenly no mandatory attendance at all whatsoever and you have complete personal responsibility.
@iro_miya @SuperDicq itās kinda weird here because i donāt go to a regular university i go to a Hochschule which used to be closer to regular schools, just with university-level classes, which i think is a fitting model for me due to me having adhd
@SuperDicq @iro_miya we didnāt clock in in school but the teachers took attendance sometimes, and if you werenāt there for more than a day or two they would call your parents
@charlotte @SuperDicq I actually pretty much did the same thing in France (I went to a IUT), with smaller, more practical classes, and I also felt like it was much better for me. I graduated in design and web programming. Later Iād learn I had ADHD, so that makes sense
@SuperDicq @iro_miya the last two years were a little bit absurd with this because they would require you to request skipping school 2 weeks in advance, or hand in a doctorās note, which wasnāt necessary in earlier years
@charlotte @iro_miya In Dutch I also went to a āHogeschoolā, but they did give me an internationally valid Bachelorās degree and in English my school calls itself āuniversityā so Iām calling it that too.
@SuperDicq @iro_miya oh yeah, mine calls itself āuniversity of applied sciencesā in english. it definitely has more of an engineering focus (it started as an engineering school, but branched into other fields)
@SuperDicq @iro_miya idk why that change was necessary because even if you are going straight to work after, you can just skip work for up to 2 days without a doctorās note lol
@charlotte @iro_miya Oh yeah I also applied science in the name. Still, a uni is a uni.
@charlotte @iro_miya Yeah itās insane how schools can be much more strict than actual workplaces.
Whatās even the point of this? How does making students miserable add to education?
@SuperDicq @iro_miya i also loved (/j) how you had to go to every single teacher for a signature with that doctorās note so they could verify that you werenāt there ?? why canāt i just go to the secretary or my main teacher and hand it in
@SuperDicq @charlotte @iro_miya For me the issue was the teacher being a dick. I could prolly speak french if the teacher didnāt make it so completely horrible to learn the language in my high school.
