While I've been wondering if my Amiga Kickstart boot hand would fit into the actual ROM, someone decided to find out. An interesting project page by Alexander Grupe just emerged:

So apparently the Vulkan graphics API is getting its own video codec extensions for encode/decode, which means portable programs targeting Vulkan graphics wouldn't have to dive into platform-specific video acceleration APIs to access the hardware-supported codecs supplied by the video driver.

This includes now an AV1 decoder extension; AV1 is the royalty-free open codec that the industry is starting to rally around, so this is a Big Win For Our Side. <3

Neat!

Framebuffer february, where you are not allowed to run X, Wayland, or any form of grafical UI for the whole of February.

Some ideas:

  • Lynx, w3m, or SDL-based Websurf, for reading all your early 2k’s blogs.
  • MPV with or without YtDLP for all your “content consumption”
  • SDL in general is a good idea for gaming. It should be sufficient.
  • All the command line tools.
  • Whatever text editor you use, as long as it is console-based.
  • Maybe screens or something for multi-application use idk.

holy shit UBI was an idea presented back in 1936??
Like, every family in America gets $3700 (2023 dollars) a month!!

Along with that, free education and training programs, increased taxes on the rich, and a fuckin income cap at $22 billion/year (still too high IMO but like, 1936 major american politics!)

Online anonymity: study found ‘stable pseudonyms’ created a more civil environment than real user names

'What matters, it seems, is not so much whether you are commenting anonymously, but whether you are invested in your persona and accountable for its behaviour in that particular forum. There seems to be value in enabling people to speak on forums without their comments being connected, via their real names, to other contexts.

...calls to end anonymity online by forcing people to reveal their real identities might not have the effects people expect'

The year is 2024. Your email client is a web browser. Your chat client is a web browser. Your word processor is a web browser. Your spreadsheet software is a web browser. Your files are all on the web and only visible with a special web browser. Your desktop is a web page. The windows on your desktop are composited as web pages. Your games are rendered by a modified web browser.

Your actual web browser is not used in any of it and cannot get at any of the web services that were once your computer's OS, GUI and applications

I think this, a discussion of the parallels between "AI" and "crypto", is a good take. I want to dig into the bit on "AI" being different because it has practical use.

"AI" is a marketing term. There's the stuff that was mainly called "ML" up until 2021 or so, which definitely has practical uses. E.g., if you're running a social network and need to help humans find the toxic stuff, ML can help.

But in the last few years there's a wave of hype mainly around the large language models, LLMs, and the large text-to-image models. So things like ChatGPT and DALL-E. It's really not clear to me those have much more practical use than crypto. Certainly not over their costs. 1/

On a regular basis, someone (usually a straight, cis, white man) says that we can solve the problem of people being nasty online by using real names. It doesn't work, and it hurts people who can't risk using their real name.

"Results show that in the context of online firestorms, non-anonymous individuals are more aggressive compared to anonymous individuals. This effect is reinforced if selective incentives are present and if aggressors are intrinsically motivated."

Snapchat has signed on in support of the horrific Kids Online Safety Act

Just FYI. Keep in mind that the requirements of this act could basically end the Internet as we know it, ultimately turning it into a China-style government system with all users' activity being linked to their government IDs, and vast new opportunities created for personal information breaches. If you're OK with that under one party's administration, consider what the OTHER party could do with it. No matter where you stand politically, it's a train wreck for the Net, and it will make things more dangerous for children, not safer.

So, the former president of the United States is calling on states to take up arms to support Texas in its standoff against the federal government. That’s about as close to calling for civil war as you’re going to get without actually saying the words.

This is a situation that could spiral out of control in a heartbeat. I would not assume it’s just bluster.
