By the way, this part of the eMudhra story doesn't get the attention it deserves: Google hired Daniel Bleichenbacher, he wrote a tool to identify insecure cryptographic artifacts, and Google did not use it regularly to check certificates and intermediates trusted by Chrome's root store.

Dave Rahardja (temporarily spooky)

This was actually quite informative.

tl;dr: The online influencer economy is collapsing. This is due to several factors including:

1. More people are becoming influencers, but ad spend hasn’t gone up accordingly.
2. Advertising using big-name influencers is no longer trendy.
3. AI has taken up 86% of VC money, making sponsors increasingly likely to be scammy AI startups that influencers don’t want to partner with, because partnering with scammy sponsors drive away future sponsors.
4. AI slop is overwhelming human-created video. They take up more YouTube insertion-ad revenue through sheer volume, and YouTube is pushing AI slop tools and accelerating the slop takeover.

There’s even more in the video. It was eye-opening to me.

@foone my silly idea is to attach a romchip and some TTL logic to an ethernet jack. it'll likely not work, but it *will* be very secure!

random photography gear recommendation: a little dye-sub printer.

you'll look at your holiday photos so much more if they are nice prints, and nobody likes dealing with printers but having one dedicated to just photography (and thus no boring documents and job interview contracts) makes it slightly less hateful

i myself have the canon selphie and it is nice sometimes. also handy if someone forgot to print out their badge for the con!

I just watched the first episode of Colombo with my husband and one of Colombo's gotchas, one of his "no sane innocent man would ever do this"s, is "Why, when you were at your vacation home four hours out of the city and got a call that there was an emergency at home, why did you drive back and not rush to the airport and get on the next flight? There's one every half hour, everyone know that"

The idea of rocking up to an airport spontaneously and buying a ticket to get on a plane leaving in fifteen minutes, as if it were a local bus, and that the whole process from door to door would be meaningfully faster than four hours, is completely culturally illegible to those of us living in the glorious future
