Actually I just want to bring food on the table, I didn't set the rules of the german IT field being the most contaminated by Windows in europe.
I don't even play vidya on my windows machines, for personal use I prefer free computing.

Also all of this is ironic considering libreboot operates outside of the FSF social contract by including (minor) blobs. GNUboot would be more deserving of the libreboot name, usually putting libre in your name means 100% free as in freedom. She should name her project "OpenBoot" or something, the open source software label is more adequate when you already compromise on 100% freedom.

she split from the FSF over transphobia (https://web.archive.org/web/20240506202329/https://lists.gnu.org/archive/html/libreboot/2016-09/msg00036.html) and later added support for hardware that cannot function without *some* blobs as a practical middle ground because at this point only crusty old machines can truly run blob-free (https://libreboot.org/news/policy.html)
she still runs https://canoeboot.org/ as the blob-free branch

@EmoIsDeadAndSoAmI @novenary I'm not sure if most people understand this but there are many devices that literally don't boot without blobs, so "no blobs" just means that a bunch of people won't be able to install the free firmware at all, being forced to stick with the proprietary one instead and I don't see how that's supposed to be better from a free software perspective. It's a complete misunderstanding of the domain.

I think hackers should strive for the most freedom, and when this is not realistically possible choose the next best most tangible solution.
There are areas where the FSF social contract is not the most achievable standard (yet), especially in firmware.
I think the FSF social contract is fine, and having 100% free firmware is a noble aspiration and great achievement when it works, but I also believe that relying on Open Source social contracts is fine when the task at hand is outside of achievable scope.
Just be transparent in what you do and why and choose the accurate descriptors instead of arbitrarily redefining words.

rather than acknowledge that proprietary firmware exists and is unavoidable for most things, they would rather hide it in a way that makes it difficult to assess what is actually running on your machine and (crucially) account for it in a reasonable threat model
it's the opposite of the pragmatic approach of accepting the blobs that cannot be removed and dealing with them another way (the libreboot policy I linked in my other reply goes over this, lb includes what's absolutely necessary and skips over things like the nvidia VBIOS which is not needed to use the machine, though it does make the discrete GPU unusable)

I know the lore, but if I'm not mistaken she later reevaluated her allegations and came to good terms with Stallman.
Even if she is not directly affiliated with the FSF she is still relying on definitions heavily shaped by the FSF. Just redefining these by herself is problematic in my personal opinion.
I would personally prefer to have Canoeboot or GNUboot be called libreboot, and see her own project renamed. Mainly because of potential confusion.
