So this guy keeps reverse-vibe-engineering Photoshop and stuff, but do these programs actually work at least semi-reliably?

@volpeon it looks like "yes to semi, no to reliably"

@volpeon Which guy, there seems to be a few "Reverse engineer Photoshop" projects.

I suspect some lawyers gonna be busy because even if the code is clean/not copied I'd think there will be patents around the interfaces and the way things are done.

That said if the people doing it are lucky enough to be in countries where the US has sod all jurisdiction and the local government doesn't care then GL suing them.

@volpeon There's already 2 big ones. Even if it may be several people on one if them, like 90% of the commits have Claude.

LTT recently did a short video about one of them I think.

@volpeon @Dragon it’s not reliable yet but adobe products are extremely well documented so it’s a great product to clone by ai

@volpeon @Dragon I'm very annoyed they market themselves as "clean room"

Because I don't know what they mean by clean room here: this term is kinda meaningless when it comes to GUI software.

@volpeon @Dragon They either are just recreating the tools from adobe products one by one by trying them out visually and comparing results, which is just the regular process of creating an alternative software and has nothing to do with clean room

Or they are looking into Adobe's code and are recreating it, which is copyright infringement even if they are trying to modify it to make it less alike, that may lead to them getting sued, because algorithms are patentable and code is copyrightable

@volpeon of course not! it would not be a good copy if they would!

@volpeon Looks like it? Haven’t tried it tho. Could try running them inside a virtual machine, just to be safe

@Dragon @volpeon semi related software patents suck so fucking much i hope they win in court if it comes to that

all IP is fake but patents are more fake and software patents are the most fake

"oh i... might have patented something that you independently made. now you can't use it."

@5225225 @Dragon @volpeon and then it’s either something anyone could have come up with or something that is used in other fields just not in software

@volpeon LightCraft (aka Lightroom) looks to be fine, laggy as fuck inside the VM, but that’s just Windows. Will test on my personal laptop next
