It is great to see alot of people joining

However 90% are either not putting enough or are providing irrelevant one's.

Please keep in mind every post can benefit from them, especially if all relevant have a hashtag before them.

This is important for , as whenever anyone does a they will find your post & the main difference compared to other where the does its magic.

@nosherwan logically this makes sense. Aesthetically though, hashtags mixed within sentences bother me and ruin my flow of reading. It feels superfluous. Sorry, this is probably a personal gripe more thank anything.

@nosherwan Oh, and hashtags also make me feel like someone is selling something to me. Search without hashtags would be excellent. Feels like hashtags could be used more optimally and thoughtfully.

@hometownpixel on everyone has to sell themselves as compared to where the algorithm magically determined who is important enough so that their can be pushed to everyone

@nosherwan right! Which is kinda cool. I know so many have differing perspectives and opinions regarding these types of things, but I personally find hashtags most useful when used sparingly and for specific topics and/or events. Community building. But almost every other word? It’s challenging for me 😅

@nosherwan why are we “selling” ourselves? Make helpful content. Engage in thoughtful conversations. And try to love each other despite our differences. I know people make social media their business and depend on contacts made for their livelihoods, but I think “selling ourselves” feels trite. I wish we honored ourselves and others more than trying to sell each other something.

@hometownpixel as you have mentioned creating & logically means you are investing time & in something so others can with you.

That is called yourself.

My explanation was not the literal meaning of the term "to sell" neither do I have any intention of creating an for selling.

in everyday life if you want to get anyone's attention for any good or bad reason, one has to sell themselves.
🙂

@nosherwan right! I don’t mean to argue about language or words. And I apologize if I’ve derailed or undermined your point. I understand the concept of “selling” one’s self. I’ve just personally struggled with how its used by advertises, influencers, and gurus to build audiences. Anyway, much kindness to you.

@nosherwan

I have echoed similar thoughts earlier. I am re-sharing them again.

Why Hashtags are important for Fediverse?

Two posts from mirabilos and Oliver, in response to a post from Jon Mueller, nicely and informally provide interesting insights about why full search for Mastodon (and rest of Fediverse) is not worth.

Social networking in Fediverse is like a little argy-bargy (talkathon) in a village square or a downtown or a pub or a corner of a road. Here one talks publicly while being fully aware that the content is ephemeral and not archived.

One would not mind being overheard in a local or even remote community. The expectation is that good content will be appreciated and carried forward by humans instead of appearing in a newspaper or getting discovered by searching though archived and persistent databases. There are no third parties monetizing the conversations. In most cases, the conversations are unlikely to have the polish and maturity for a publication.

The above mentioned outlook will help us to appreciate why hashtags are so important to join the right conversations locally or remotely and spread the good thoughts in ActivityPub based Fediverse.

I suggest that there is no need to mix hashtags with sentences. That is also not favorable to my taste. They can be mentioned at the end of the post.

@nosherwan @hometownpixel

The conventional notion of selling may not be applicable here.

The purpose of hashtags is to increase the reach, provide context and a level playing platform for all. This means that one need not be a algorithm boosted social influencer to be visible. With an appropriate hashtag, even the first post of a new Fediverse joinee may get reasonable interaction depending on the quality of the post.

@srijit@akko.chir.rs @hometownpixel @srijit@mas.to that is true, however based on numbers of interactions it will not be suggested to more users
