What if, instead of controlling every move your game character made, you could tell them what you wanted and watch them live, act, and connect with others on their own in the changing game world?
[...]
That connection continues even when the player leaves the game. Characters can keep living in the world, send updates to the player, and ask for input when they need it. In a shared multiplayer world, they can also meet, react to, and talk with other players’ characters, allowing relationships and stories to emerge without continuous direction from their players.
lmao, this shit is so in line with silicon valley types. They think we need productivity apps, todo lists, pomodoro timers, calendars, and now they invent a way to play games without any of the fun in the name of staying productive.

@volpeon also like there’s an entire group of games where you tell your characters what to do instead of doing it yourself, mostly in the strategy genre

@volpeon It's not a bad gimmick idea, but it's a gimmick, not an improvement.
Also, they just made shitty tomodachi.

@flesh If they had framed their tech as a way to create more realistic and engaging single player game experiences, I actually would've been on board

@volpeon

RPing with characters that are players some of the time and NPCs at other times sounds absolutely miserable.

@volpeon in the beginning we had ogame. with a counter, where stuff "happened" without player interaction. then we got other games with a similar principle with animations to keep us engaged while the counter ticked down.
this feels somehow worse by turning openworld games into ogame?

Because this came up a few times: yes, there are games where the player manages NPCs. That's fine.
But what they did is take a game where the player take an active role and made it so AI plays the game for you. They didn't use it in a way I would've been fine with, i.e. making NPCs more interesting and capable. They have it play on your behalf so you don't need to. And the underlying tone here and with anything silicon valley puts out is that productivity is the only purpose of our existence, and playing games is one of those sinful activities that prevents people from being productive.

@volpeon so they are making AI write "poetry", draw "art", play games for us in our stead so we have more time to work soul less jobs, according to this trend the next step would be AI doing our cuddles and our sleep for us in our stead so we can stay awake 24/7 and be productive bunny_drool
