look man, i know you don't want bots in your mmo. i get it, you have an economy to run.

that said, making me complete a *literal* arrow-keys captcha every 15 minutes is possibly the worst piece of game design i have ever personally been witness to

@nepi literally the anti-bot system from original RuneScape (it forced you to sleep which made you enter a captcha)

it was removed because it was annoying and ultimately easily solved

i feel like i need to be an edna mode to MMO designers. going around and yelling "no economies!" at them

i wonder if economies are just a "we've always done it this way" thing in MMO design.

ostensibly the reason for their existence is to prompt interaction between players but *anyone* who has played an MMO would know that this idea disintegrates on first contact with players. so why put them in at all?

@nepi ultimately it’s a useful function to, early game, gate progression, and in late game, deal with surplus class-specific loot, which exists to prolong the lifespan of content since an MMO requires people to stay playing for it to not collapse, and you’d need to produce a bonkers amount of new content otherwise

@nepi that being said, the best MMO economy is always going to be EVE Online, partially because they actually got economists to help with it, so it’s a lot more real where income is more about scale and risk and less about arbitrary higher level gear

@ChlorideCull Sure, these are the functions, but surely there must be some other way to accomplish this without all of the difficulties and knock-on effects that having an economy brings along with it. I'm just struggling to think of any games that have even *tried* anything in this realm.

@nepi I’m certain it’s been tried internally in basically every MMO designed, the issue is that it’s the least psychologically exhausting gating method

XP grinding is tedious, and drop grinding where you otherwise wouldn’t get anything is demoralizing

Plus, if your goal is to stop bots, you need to get rid of RMT, and the only way to do that is to either prevent transferring resources between people at all, or enforcing equal value trades (like RuneScape did for a while, it was unpopular)

@ChlorideCull @nepi FFXIV gates everything behind quest progression and dungeon/raid loot is usually prohibited from trade. makes the economy only tight in the early game and the main and the main things that are sold on the market board is furniture, cosmetics, materials for enhancing the stats on your gear, and mounts and minions. and also raid potions and raid food

@ChlorideCull @nepi ffxiv also got a rampant bot problem, there are very few checks implemented to prevent botting. but the only place where it imo is truly a problem is PVP
