And in Firefox of all browsers

@risc every other client sucks. I tested them all. I hated every last one of them.

@risc here’s a post detailing some of the issues I had with some of the clients I tried

This one uses Fedilab bc even Moshidon drains its battery like crazy. Can't imagine what Sharkey web is like, especially in the rather slow mobile Firefox..

@risc

Can’t imagine what Sharkey web is like, especially in the rather slow mobile Firefox..

I can imagine what it’s like. it’s horrible .

Sharkey Web + Firefox + janky server backend with many connectivity issues over its lifespan, are NOT fun.

Sharkey has taught me patience.

@raccoon @alina it’s great it’s like if you put niri on Android and it wasn’t free and it didn’t do window management. actually it’s nothing like niri but it does scroll !!! heck yeah baybeeee it feels so satisfying

@sodiboo oh god.. is this one spoiled by fast native apps (granted, on an often shit connection)... like, if something it uses regularly is slow or unresponsive, it suffers greatly and tries to fix it asap

Tbh, you might want to revisit other clients now since at least something changed since 2024

@risc perhaps but honestly I’m so used to the PWA at this point that it’s not worth switching.

the original post mentioned a feature I liked that the PWA doesn’t have: persisting scroll position.

it’s literally the only benefit I could get from switching to a native client. like yeah the load speeds too but that’s a skill issue because of misconfiguration. the main reason I still care is because I do kinda wish my scroll position persisted.

but it’s been over a year, and I’m used to not having that feature. I do miss scroll position persistence. but I can live without it. I’m no longer seeking it out.

and the PWA does everything else quite well.

@kimapr eh Akkoma's UI doesn't compare to *key
Sharkey's UI manages to make this one's laptop struggle, in both Firefox and (the more efficient) Chromium, while Akkoma is quite light

@risc @sodiboo “akkoma”, “light” yeahhhhhno

akkoma is a giant memory leak, i have to keep closing and restarting it because otherwise i have like 400 mb of ram left

and this is with zram swap i will add

@kimapr @risc can confirm Sharkey makes my workstation struggle. no idea about akkoma

@kimapr
wha- okay nevermind. At least it doesn't abuse the JS engine and renderer as much, so progress ig??

@risc @sodiboo somehow though it doesn’t cause much issues on mobile, other than that it’s the only web app where push notifications don’t fucking work

@sodiboo @kimapr @risc when i used a *key the web ui would cause my phone to kernel panic and reboot semi regularly

akkoma on the other hand is perfectly fine

@sodiboo how the fuck does it manage to murder both a lower end laptop and a high end workstation. what
@kimapr

@risc @kimapr I have a tendency to accidentally leave many Sharkeys open. like 5-8 tabs and that’s my memory GONE

@Rairii @kimapr @risc oh my phone does that regardless of if I use Sharkey or not

@sodiboo neocat_0_0
Didn't you have like.. A lot of RAM?? Only thing this one knows related to fedi that was this bad was Tuba, holy fuck it's leaking memory like a toilet leaking water

It was impossible to practically use on this one's 8 GB of RAM+zram for more than a few mins bc the leak kept getting worse. It's like RA but less powerful

@kimapr

@risc @kimapr I have a lot of addressable memory . I gave it like 60 GiB of swap space (for a total of 90 GiB addressable memory) to mitigate specifically Sharkey (and to a lesser extent, Cinny) using it all.

with such a setup, I think I’ve only gotten oomkilled once. but, many times, my system just hard locks up.

@sodiboo what... neocat_0_0
This one is using <<4 GB most of the time even with RA and shit, and also practically never runs into OOM (well, systemd-oomd). How.
@kimapr

@sodiboo @kimapr @risc oom when it fails the only job it has and locks down the whole system

1

@MarkAssPandi @kimapr @risc actually it only locks up in userspace. i tested this. all the GUI stuff is in userspace so it feels unresponsive, but i can still ping it. it’s still visible to wireguard peers, because wireguard is in the kernel. but tailscale goes out, since that’s implemented in userspace.

kernel is fine. but my entire userspace is not. when this happens.

@raccoon @alina well it’s free but it has some features that are paid. core functionality is free though and there aren’t like ads or anything. it’s good stuff. I recommend

@sodiboo @risc
(repost)
my instance is on sharkey

and after a year NOTHING changed. all clients still suck.

i use moshidon, it shares most of the issues of megalodon, but ADDITIONALLY it sometimes fails to load feed and just shows blank page with “NO_SUCH_NOTE” text

@cat8124
Wasn't that fixed in a recent hotfix release

I installed it and blocked it from having internet access, just in case.

@cat8124 @sodiboo @risc if closely watching notifications is not a want of yours, I’d recommend Aria for Misskey

it seems to recreate Misskey’s web client design and functionality pretty closely, and it is pretty good at it

biggest issue with it i have is complete lack of push notifications though, so it might suck a lot in some use cases. also lacks some functionality Sharkey has over Misskey, which includes lack of possibility to enable display of specific words that trigger word triggers (like “example said something about “politics””), and that it does not recognize enabling cat ears without cat accent

if push notifs are not needed though i regard is as the best of those i tried

@Chloe @alina @sodiboo I wish my school would let me oauth thunderbord so I can just use that ‘til the end of days, but sadly it is never that simple

@sodiboo realize you might appreciate this - I've put my time/battery in my niri overview and I took some inspiration from niagara - it's beautiful: https://files.freshly.space/share/pak0jwi2rq6n/2025-08-14%2011-27%20niri%20overview%20niagaralike.mp4

@sodiboo @risc @ilyamikcoder i installed aria for misskey right now, its ui feels kind of overloaded

notifications dont work for me anyway because monocles chat’s (or conversations) unifiedpush intergration is broken, so i dont care about it

@cat8124 @sodiboo @risc misskey/sharkey by itself is kind of overloaded, that’s why i think computa
