HOT TAKE: framework laptops are as repairable as any other business grade laptop (lenovo thinkpad, dell latitude, etc). they just market to LTT viewers instead of IT departments.

@eri yes, this, ogh my gods. and at a massive premium, because, y'know, LTT viewers

@freya @eri the conceit is that total cost of ownership is lower because parts are interchangeable generation-to-generation (which is occasionally true for other vendors but not advertised and not especially frequently)

@leo @freya except they’re built like shit so the parts break and you can’t reuse them.

@leo @freya meanwhile my base spec thinkpad from over 5 years ago still works even after i accidentally put it under the leg of a chair and sat on it

@freya @eri (also i don't think MSRP is significantly higher compared to XPSes and ThinkPads? other vendors are just regularly available on sale or used)

@leo @freya well yeah corpos buy them new and then throw them out after 3 years

@eri @freya i have literally never a 13" laptop other than a macbook that wasn't built like shit

@eri @freya reviews claimed the framework 13 pro isn't. 1. huge if true 2. i don't believe this

@leo @freya eh i don’t have the kind of money to afford their machines anyways. if they gave me one for free i’d probably like it so that explains why the youtubers do

@leo @freya @eri new-to-new is a bad comparison if the used market for one is astronomically larger

@slowfallinward @eri @freya in terms of buying recommendations sure, but not whether it's "at a massive premium"

@slowfallinward @eri @freya but also there was a period of a few years where mobile CPUs were actually getting faster year-over-year which made used a significantly worse option for some people. that kind of stopped though i think

@leo @slowfallinward @freya genuinely all computers have stagnated since chatgpt dropped lmao

@eri meanwhile the port density on these things are abysmal

@eri Old Thinkoads yes. Modern ones not so sure, they have soldered ram and no replacacable battery and all that shit that makes them suck

@SuperDicq do all of them now? i thought it was only the 13inch ones

@SuperDicq @eri plus dell latitude as a product line outright doesn't exist anymore

@eri Actual hot take would be more: I wouldn't be surprised that Latitudes and Thinkpads makes obtaining and changing parts easier than framework (no geoblocking for example), plus quite few Thinkpads have aftermarket parts.

(Also repairability for me is more MNT Reform kind of thing, should be something that lasts way past the warranty or other forms of vendor involvement, otherwise it's just good product support)

@lanodan meanwhile the framework specifically has patents to prevent third parties from making compatible parts outside of the sanctioned ecosystem.

@eri and i can’t support Framework in good conscience since they still donate to DHH (for their rails conference) and Hyprland.

(*Dell also donates to Omarchy.)

@neon well yeah but when you buy one second hand they don’t get your money. don’t buy a new one lmao

@SuperDicq @eri I will give framework one thing, they made lenovo give a single shit about repairability for the first time in a while.
they use LPCAMM ram now and are designed to be opened up easily. I argue they're more repairable now than they were back when you say they were repairable, since you have much easier access to the mainboard.
like old thinkpads, you had easy access to the battery, ram, storage, etc, but anything else requires a full disassembly, I argue that this makes the macbook neo more repairable than those thinkpads.

@eri @lanodan this true? with all the yt buzz around their repairability I never heard this nor would I think it can be true. using their motherboards in a one-off custom build doesn't count then?

@wlrn @eri Yeah, it's true they have patents, no idea how they license them though.

@wlrn @lanodan the main thing you can’t do is make your own motherboard that’s compatible with their hardware without licensing afaik
