How is the EU planning to *enforce* chat control? Like

Suppose there's a company, providing an E2EE service. Like Signal. If Signal does not backdoor their client, what will EU do? Sanction them? What if someone forks the client and removes the backdoor? Will the EU go after individuals providing .patch files for the Signal client? Or source code dists? Or build dists? Will they go after, say, F-Droid? What if the servers & owner are outside of the EU? Will they force ISPs to ban F-Droid's IPs & domains? Will they send armed groups to anyone that uses F-Droid? Will they monitor traffic of, say, XMPP? And anyone that is found using an unbackdoored client will get an armed group on their door?

How *do* they plan to enforce mass surveillance like that? Like, seriously. To enforce this, they will need to implement severe monitoring of everything, and like... They have not passed a bill that lets them do most of this, have they?

What is the actual *impact* gonna be, if this passes, for me, and my friends, that are capable of installing applications from 3rd party stores? Are they gonna go after me for developing an E2EE'd chat protocol?

Like, I see a lot of stuff of how it's the end of safe living in the EU, if this passes, and yea, it would be, if they can actually enforce this, but I don't think they have the infrastructure or resources to enforce this. Heck, China and Russia are failing, and they have been trying to do this for decades.

@ity they’re like sundown laws. you only enforce them selectively, when you’re mad at someone for a reason that isn’t illegal.

@ity it's to make it illegal to raccommit raccrimes (which is already illegal)

And to manufacture guilt. Even if they can't prove you did something wrong, your use of an illegal chat platform means you are a raccriminal

So the point is to make use of secure communication illegal, so if they don't like you, they can just put you in prison for that after raiding you

I presume they are gonna make Tor and friends illegal too? Like, does this bill do that

@eri Hmm, even then, to what extent are they able to use this law to harass beans? Like, clearly the primary target is Signal. But are they only targeting big chat apps? Or will they target individuals?
