@ielenia there even used to be a purple 500€ note but those don't get printed anymore because of money laundering concerns

though we don't have 1€ and 2€ notes either, those are coins instead

@ielenia here's a picture of it ("Muster" means sample, this wouldn't be printed on real bills)

@LunaDragofelis 500€ is absurd, who needs that much cash that can’t be handled by simply 5 100€ notes

here we don’t have anything past $100 but i really wish we’d switch over to using $1 coins (but keep the $2 notes and maybe use them more widely - we could replace pennies with $1 coins and $1 notes with $2 notes and then nobody has to change any tills or anything)

mind you we have $1 coins already but they didn’t do the one thing they needed to do to get people to actually use them (i.e. get rid of $1 bills) so now they sit in relative obscurity, annoying cashiers with their lack of a place to put them in a typical till

@LunaDragofelis also here $10 bills are used somewhat rarely, usually you mostly see $1, $5, and $20

@LunaDragofelis i don’t know for sure why this is, although i suspect some of it is because most ATMs give out $20s and maybe $5s, and using 2 $5 bills instead of 1 $10 bill is not enough of an extra amount of bills to really matter

@ielenia it follows the 1/2/5 pattern we have with coins and notes, we also had 500 but that’s gone now. 100 and 200 are quite rare, we mostly use notes up to 50, ATMs don’t have notes above 50

you can also have a 0€ “banknote” if you want, it’s the cheaper equivalent of the tourist coins

@ielenia the 500€ bill is still considered valid cash as far as I know, they just don't print new ones anymore. Basically if you still have one, you can theoretically still pay with it (but many shops don't take 200 and 500 bills anyway). Even the current series of bills doesn't have a 500€ design anymore.

@ielenia @LunaDragofelis I don’t know what our highest denomination note is but the highest I’ve ever owned was £50 and that was when I needed it for a deposit so I only had it for the brief time it took me to get it out of the bank and to whoever I was paying.

Back when I carried cash the highest denomination note I regularly carried was £10 and the occasional £20.

@KrazyKritter @ielenia the ATM of my bank allows me to pick manually between €10, €20, €50 and €100 bills. I usually only withdraw €10 and €20 for myself, though I withdraw €50 bills for mom often.

Me and mom have an arrangement that she pays fixed costs like rent and utilities for us together, while I withdraw cash for us both. We started this when she retired and I started getting a decently paid job.

@KrazyKritter @LunaDragofelis iirc the british pound is a bit more valuable so that might be why; here it’s very common to have a lot of $20 bills but not nearly as common for anything higher (or the aforementioned $10 which is weirdly less common than either the $5 or $20)

@ielenia @LunaDragofelis One dollar is apparently worth around 75p. That seems about right from when I’ve paid people in the USA via PayPal.

@ielenia @LunaDragofelis international commerce of larger sums is my guess

when the euro was introduced, there was no S€PA for inexpensive international bank transfers in the EU, no unified european card standard aside from Credit Cards (which still are comparatively difficult to get). so presumably it was for going to a car dealership abroad and paid 10,000€ in cash. nowadays you can’t even use cheques for that

Nowadays i would rather not use any bill larger than 20€. 100€+ are heavily counterfeited and places that don’t have a UV light for verification in many cases simply do not accept them

@ielenia @LunaDragofelis This reminds me of Polish 500 PLN notes (around 115 Euro) and the recently cancelled plans for 1000 PLN ones. Also 200 PLN that are not used in ATMs.

They are cool new things for some people getting their income in cash (as my grandparents used to get their pensions). They might be politically cool for the party and the politician getting his signature on them. There is the official argument that these make bulk bank things more efficient.

I don't see much need for them, I can handle several times more pieces of (lighter and smaller) paper with less difficulties exchanging it or using for its intended purpose.
