For the "Mastodon is dead" crowd.

No it isn't. soft_owo

Have you...

  • Followed and engaged with other people by boosting and commenting?
  • Looked up content you want for your feed using hashtags?
  • Tagged your own posts with hashtags?

This is a social network, not an algorithmic firehose. You actually have to build meaningful social relationships. It'll never feel like the deluge of content you get from places like Twitter or Bluesky because it's not meant to. wolf_peek You have to curate your own feed and cultivate your own following, nothing is going to do that for you.

I'm glad Bluesky exists for people who want the deluge, but pls, for the love of dog, if you're going to leave here for there, on your Bluesky account FOLLOW THE BLUESKY BRIDGE. blobfoxtableflip

@Rusty I think the biggest barrier to these sorts of communities is how much people are used to seeing millions of likes and thousands of reposts. It's really hard to adjust from a dopamine firehose designed to cause addiction to smaller numbers, but more meaningful social interaction.

@Rusty A lot of people don't tend to realize they're in a community nowadays.

@Rusty I don't follow blue sky as it's a centralized platform. You may be able to host your own server but as I've experienced if the central server goes down or you can't speak to the central server for any reason you're not able to federate with other servers plus you rely actively on the central website being up to even log in

@snow You can't host your own instance or anything, you can just run your own PDS which has no tangible benefit beyond saving Bluesky some money in hosting cost. I don't get the point of ATProto at all.

@bunches Yeah exactly. I don't think a lot of people remember the time before these big social networks driven by algorithmic feeds. A lot of us started in forums but seem to have forgotten that. corgi_roll

@bunches @Rusty The scary part is that the 'algorithm' also controls and decides what you can or can't see. By convenience, we allow AI to make us lazy. When enough people will have relinquished enough power (and skills), we will be dependent and easier to manipulate.

@pilou @bunches I always think of the people aboard the Axiom in WALL-E tbh.

@Rusty I remember when the Bluesky bridge was rather new, and I saw some of the stuff people boosted from there.

Decided I could definitely do without that.

Which is not to say anything but: to each their own! Though personally, I'm mostly happy here for what it does.

🙂

(Is Mastodon and Fedi perfect? No! But it's certainly the least bad place I've found in a long while, and it gives me the tools to keep most of the parts I don't want to see out of my feed.)

@mkj (that's why I push for Bluesky users to follow the bridge-- hence why I linked the Bluesky side of it, but don't really push for Mastodon users to do the same blobfoxmlem but shhhh)

But yeah, to each their own for sure. I can't stand Bluesky and the constant firehose of stuff that, while I like some of it, it's overwhelming and just turns my brain into mush.

@baubau Yeah, I think people kind of miss the point of the "social" part of social media. Everywhere else treats the amount of friends you have and engagements you receive as a form of social currency and clout instead of a way to forge friendships and connection.

@Rusty i do think Mastodon needs those starter pack things to make it possible to get started, but don't they have those now?

@cassiopeia A little bit? There's recommended accounts and stuff. I think it'd be nice if one of the steps was having users look up hashtags to follow.

@Rusty They market it as hosting your own instance which is really dumb because the only thing it allows you to do is use your domain as like a vanity thing. They also say it makes it "decentralized" which is a bold face lie.

@snow You don't need to host your own server to use a custom domain. And yeah, ATProto is not decentralized, it's *modular*. You can reuse your PDS between different ATProto silos but none of the ATProto implementations talk to each other. It's really stupid. Also no matter what implementation you're on, you're still stuck using their directory service for your DID, which is so laughably centralized that it's wild to think anyone thinks ATProto has a future in the decentralized web.

@Rusty I mean like a list of people to follow

@cassiopeia You mean like a shareable list? No we don't have those.

We need those though blobfoxsipglare It'd come with some downsides like the witch hunt bullshit a lot of Bluesky users do while sharing block lists, but I think the positives outweigh the negatives.

@Osito Right??? blobfoxmeltsob Like, you have to put in some work!! Even Bluesky with all of their algorithms still forces you to do something.

@Rusty I think there had been a lot of garbage in social media for years. I prefer to attempt to separate the two, social / media.

I care more about making friends and posting organically about what I'm interested in, and going from there - even if it takes months to get any engagement. I don't care about stats and using it to make money - I don't need that. I have a Bluesky, and several other social media accounts but none are Meta or X anymore. I am more active on Mastodon than I am anywhere.

Bluesky has been annoying lately because it is full of too much politics all the time and it just doesn't make me feel good.

@russ_am I feel like any centralized social media makes me pretty miserable corgi_roll I'm a very political bean and even I got worn out by Bluesky quickly the same way I did with Twitter. I still use it, but pretty sparingly.

I like smol, cozy socials. wolfcomfy
