mastodon jumping through huge technical hoops to prevent something entirely hypothetical on fedi (we do know it's toxic on twitter, but those toxic patterns have not materialized with *oma or *key quotes)

i think the takeaway is that while technical decisions do inform social dynamics, so too social dynamics inform the outcome of technical decisions. if your site culture is conditioned by engagement-driven algorithms that feed conflict, yes things like quote posts are going to be used in toxic ways. but in a network where the culture is not shaped from the start by artificial conflict, different outcomes are possible

@ireneista sure, but it just seems rather silly to me when those protections don’t even work on the existing software implementing quotes. i could quote that very reply, and have been able to since before mastodon-style quotes were even proposed. and yet, the network did not succumb to constant quote dunking

@dangerdyke well, like, this stuff is socially defined, too. when we run into instances whose sole purpose appears to be spreading hatred, we do an instance-level block of them, which we feel free to do because our instance is single-user. so we avoid situations where people using software that caters to a hate audience would be quote-tooting us at all.

@ireneista our view is that quote dunk harassment is just a symptom of a larger problem: moderation being unresponsive to harassment. as an admin, if a user on my instance was subject to a harassment campaign utilizing quote dunks, we would simply issue suspensions and/or defederations as appropriate
