like you can run a deepseek model locally and that's definitely more private than any sort of hosted service. hell i was running the ai dungeon model locally on my computer 5 years ago

@chjara ok it seems really fucking overengineered for what amounts to “you send a message to proton and it runs an llm on it” because there’s all this encryption stuff going on that are literally reversible by proton because proton is quite literally doing that

@chjara @charlotte yeah you can run a lot of open models locally, on pretty much any hardware thanks to distillation. I'm running a distilled DeepSeek R1 model locally on my computer through a command-line client. I 100% recommend it over any cloud-based service. it's completely private, and also less energy intensive (thus better for the planet), since instead of a massive data center running a large model with hundreds of billions of parameters, a regular desktop, laptop, or phone can run a much smaller version that can be <10B or even <1B.
