GLaDTheresCake@todon.nl@mynameistillian There's no appreciable difference at all. The split was caused by the brothers who own it disagreeing on wanting to sell tobacco products (süd yes, nord no). And I believe süd has stopped doing that now as well. They have similar supply chains and products and are trying to re-merge in the future under Aldi Nord's logo. So there is no real difference anymore.

aldi in the US is represented by aldi süd. however, today i learned aldi nord owns trader joe’s, which almost exclusively sells store-brand stuff (compared to aldi’s “half name-brand, half store-brand” format)
as for which one’s better… aldi US charges 25¢ for you to use a cart (yes, really. there’s a slot that you insert a coin into on the cart. i have not seen any other place do this) so i’m gonna have to go with trader joe’s lol

@ericjames @mynameistillian Do the coins stay in the slot, or can they be reclaimed when returning the cart? I think these were common here.
I recognize Trader Joe's as the brand of snacks (nuts) in Aldi here.

I've never even heard of one that doesn't, tbh, and it seems really inconvenient (where would it store the coins??)

BluefoxLongtail@pawb.fun@ericjames @mynameistillian To add to this, Trader Joe's is very much a upper middle to upper class establishment competing with [regional store that slots in right below Whole Foods]. Aldi is a place middle class and lower people can afford to shop, competing with discount grocers and Walmart.
The 25¢ is a big part of that, because people return their carts to get their quarters back so they don't have to hire someone to go fetch carts. ^^
