I'm web searching the shit out of water pumping stations in the Netherlands.

This is for a photography project I've been sitting on for years now.

@dysfun
I know one thing: I'm not as much of a nerd as the folks who created this website https://gemalen.nl/

The example photo on the english language wikipedia page for pumping stations is a dutch pumping station, of course.

This is amazing, if you click the 'Voeg aan kaart toe' button ('Add to map') it opens a map with all the pumping stations in this database.

The province of Limburg has so few pumping stations that I'm seriously starting to doubt whether it can actually be considered a part of the Netherlands.

okay, time to leverage the power of openstreetmap which will hopefully make the map viewing experience a lot less horrible.

By the way, I've had a little list of pinned locations for this photo project that I've started so long ago. I think I'll try to cross-reference these locations with the map I'm currently making. But I think this project will really benefit from a nice printed map that I can work from in a more structured way.

Making a nice cycling route to hit many pumping stations in one day!

Pumping station project update:

On Monday I took some photos of a couple of faves in dusk and dark. They’re not there, yet. Some of the photos are fair enough, but I will treat them more as studies of the subjects.

I am aiming for a one-per-thing style, which is tricky because I want to achieve both a good representation of the entire station but also make something that captures the visual aspect of what makes me feel happy about them.

Tuesday (yesterday) I photographed another fave and particularly driving example for this project in my mind. Daylight. Boring light probably? But I took a very square approach with some shots that I expect to really like. Another set with a little tree with orange berries next to it, which may look pretty with the orange roof tiles.

I’ll edit them this afternoon. Maybe they are cool, despite the prima facie boring light.

The weather today is a bit rougher. More wind, less sun. I think what I really want to do is a bike ride without the camera, and to just revisit one of the stations that are very close, this evening.

Also, this project would be helped massively by fog. But it’s summer…

I’m starting to think that winter or fall shots would really fit this theme. So maybe I’ll put this on hiatus for a bit when I have given it a fair shot this week.

I think I’ll start doing some simple layout for a zine with the photos I have after today and see what I think.

To be clear: I really like doing this project thus far. From a process perspective I’m quite happy, and some of the output is actually more decent than what I would have expected at this stage :)

@ma3ke im hoping you will share here when it is ready! It sounds like the sort of project I aspire to but never get around to

@ginabythebay

For sure. I hope you don't mind my tendency to let artworks marinate sometimes, instead of sharing them early :[] Part of me really wants to share the direct work in progress, but I find it is risky because it can distract from doing the work and it may also make me mentally commit to some local minimum, rather than lingering a bit longer to figure out something that's even better.

Yesterday evening I took another shot at one I had visited before. The light was much more pleasant and interesting, and I am pleased with this result.

This morning I also had the chance to edit some I took on Tuesday and I think they turned out well.

Process is starting to yield progress.

The me-getting-a-good-photo-printer thing may be happening. If it does it will be so exciting to print works from this project :)

Tonight I shot this pumping station North-West of Groningen until my camera battery ran out.

It’s the one I showed above in this thread, at the Dorkwerdersluis.

@ma3ke The diffraction makes the lights very pretty, it nearly makes it seem unreal. Great photos!

@erk yesss, I’ve recently really enjoyed the diffraction stars around bright lights in dark scenes. Such a cool aspect of photography!
