I think the idea was that clippy would never ask for your location, make you create a ms account, download GBs of AI model data, etc. Sure he was annoying, but the most annoying part of windows then was still more privacy respecting than the average windows feature now. It’s worth watching the video tbh.

this was around the time where the us actually sued microsoft over bundling a web browser with their operating system, in which this was ruled as monopolistic behavior.

clippy is made by the same company, just at a time where it wasn‘t feasible to do any of these things you mentioned. if in the late 90s always-on broadband internet access was seen as an absolute necessity, if storage sizes measured in the 1,000s of gigabytes instead of a single one, if LLMs were developed 30 years sooner, this would have happened similarly if not identically. the difference between clippy and mico is 30 years of tech and infra improvements
