I have opened FreeCAD for the first time
start your clocks to when I decide I hate it, like every other 3D editing program I have ever used

I'm used to them all using different ways to move the camera, but I was REALLY not expecting "hold the middle button and left mouse, BUT you have to press middle button first or it won't work"

The best time to pick up a new 3d editor is when you're already pissed off at another failing, you're medically unable to watch any tutorial videos, and your eyes are too blurry to read small text

giving up and trying to OpenSCAD it

oh goody, the OpenSCAD stable is 5 years old.

NIGHTLY IT IS THEN, because they added Dark Mode at some time between the last stable and now

@foone yeah stable also doesn't work natively on ARM Macs and it's using an *ancient* CSG engine. Nightly is so much faster and more capable, and I don't get why they refuse to make another stable release after all this time.

@fluffy @foone last time I tried nightly (before the LLM bullshit) it was way faster than stable, but very buggy as you'd expect from a nightly so I figured they were still a long way from a new release

@luana @fluffy LLM bullshit? uh oh

@luana @foone god damnit

I've been thinking of switching to some other constraint-based modeling system like solvespace or jscad, maybe this is what pushes me there, even though I have like 15 years of OpenSCAD experience

ok I think I have a working OpenSCAD script.

It generates an invalid model but my slicer can fix it

@fluffy @foone never tried those, jscad seems to be javascript which ew but solvespace seems alright and easier to learn than freecad so I should probably try it. Tho yeah, I used to love OpenSCAD so much so I'm extremely disappointed blobcatverysad

@luana @foone My big dislike of jscad is that it's browser-based instead of a nice local app, but javascript-the-language is at least somewhat more regular than the weird quasi-C that OpenSCAD uses.

@fluffy @foone hmmm I like the OpenSCAD language a lot. Never used C so idk how similar it is, tho I think OpenSCAD is a functional language while C is imperative?

@luana @foone OpenSCAD doesn't really fit into any programming language category because it's not really a programming language, but what scripting-like stuff it does do is firmly imperative.

@fluffy @foone Honestly I'd kinda love if someone just rewrote without ai the OpenSCAD app ("compiler"?) in rust or whatever while keeping the same language and retrocompatibility, it's really one of the languages I enjoy writing the most, which makes my disappointment even bigger

@luana @foone like honestly I've been pretty fed up with OpenSCAD's lack of first-class functions for a while anyway

@foone I have this in my procrastination backlog (i.e. haven't worked though it myself yet), maybe helpful?

@foone

I quite like it, but it's not without flaws and limitations. You need to follow it's preferred workflow.
This channel has very good videos, esp. for beginners.
