All these gameboy clones are ugly as sin. Austere bricks.

Slightly related, the jp/eu snes controller has a slight curve to its top surface, but in the US it's just flat and looks... wrong.

Original PSP & GB pocket had nice curves. Colour had that bevel.

I partly suspect that aside from some shift in design (due to apple), clones tend to lose something because of a form of... observational loss. If you don't know of and understand features/details, then you can't see or bother with them.

I experience this when drawing a new subject from reference for the first time. I miss a ton of stuff and make assumptions about squares, straight lines and even thicknesses, because my brain is very reductive when encoding things for transfer.

After I learned about... e.g. some of the limitations of plastic injection moulds, it became much easier to notice that some case edges can't be exactly 90 degrees because then they couldn't be smoothly ejected from the mould. Now I see it everywhere.

@androidarts I don't remember last time I handled GB or GBC, but what I do remember is the feeling of grabbing one: those always felt shockingly comfortable in hand. Especially the GB! Brick like that should not feel so balanced and non-bulky. Contours and weight distribution made both feel more lighter than expected.

@orva It feels a little weird when they're very flat I suppose. There's a reason why game controllers have extra plastic to grab onto (and sometimes even added weights).

@androidarts not only the bevel but did you ever notice the gameboy colour is very subtly curved? clever indeed
