Not to be all "solving social problems with technical solutions" but what if there was a web of trust where following someone was a vouch and blocking someone was an anti-vouch and users were marked as red if they had more anti-vouches than vouches in the group of the people you follow

@root if you follow people who engage in dogpiling that is your problem

@charlotte well what if i'm the person being dogpiled who never talked to any of them in the first place and i'm not very happy that you just designed a system that told people to give me death threats on the internet over made up bullshit

@root if 1000 people anti-vouch you because you were dogpiled, I am not following enough of them for that to really affect the end result

@charlotte also worth noting that a common trick amongst these people is to follow you around and spread a bunch of lies about terrible things you didn't do in the past (or things which you did and then made up for like 5 years ago it's a case by case thing) and basically hold everyone around you at gunpoint to either abandon you or be put into the bottom of the dogpile with you

@root since the vouching is tied to following, your followers would be vouching you in this system

@charlotte in this scenario you're the person who made the addon getting taken to court for enabling organized harassment lmao

idk how to explain to you that any sort of system like that will be immediately misused to hurt the most vulnerable people while actually evil people get away scott free

also bots are a thing lmaooo

@charlotte Do you mean something like what the Oriville had in season 1 Episode 7?

People had badges with up and down arrows that others could push providing instant feedback on any interactions. The episode focused on the problems that mod rule can have in this system.

@root if you actually read what I am saying you would see that botting or dogpiling the system would have extremely limited effect. It would not show all the vouches or anti-vouches that are made, just the ones by people you personally vouched for

@root the idea here is that it allows you to avoid harassment because your friends (who you have vouched for) potentially anti-vouched this racist's account and nobody vouched for it

@root if you used extensions like shinigami eyes it is a much more solid idea simply because there is a reason for why a user is marked as red and not because the dev said that this specific highway was transphobic because bloom filters

the most difficult part of actually implementing this is protecting this all because some users have follow lists private for a good reason and block lists are always private

@charlotte look up Private Set Intersection.

The short form is you want to know how your friends think but have to be careful not to let abuse spiral out of control.

@charlotte A per-person bloomlist (or xorlist) of people they follow and of people they block could be a solution here. You could prove someone follows or block someone else, you could make a list of which of your followers follow or block a person, you could even deduce the total amount of followers or blocks a person has, but you couldn't enumerate them.

Has advantages for federation of posts as well; you could instantly deduce which posts to federate to someone or to some server without even exposing their follows.
