in the end i will probably not do the high speed rails. i will conquer germany by slow trains only. and the TGV, that'll be for a next time.

(no i still haven't driven a high-speed train ever in my life, despite having lived in france for years)

Friend: Why do developers use mechanical keyboards?

Me: A mechanical keyboard could help developers type more quickly and more accurately.

Friend: No. Developers use mechanical keyboards to *strongly* type their code.

Me: Get out.

Cursed Windows fact: you can activate keyboard shortcuts even if you press the keys on different keyboards

More cursed: this triggers the release of the first key separately, so Win+R opens the run dialog when pressing R, and then the start menu when releasing the Windows key.

(In the video, I only test this with the start key on the laptop keyboard, but that’s just because I can’t show the other way while holding a camera. The behavior is the same, I promise.)

From the ar(t)chive...

One of several intro artworks from the computer game The Settlers 2 (1996). I first created a pencil sketch, scanned it, and then added the colors in Photoshop on a PC.

The in-game artworks for the actual game were created on an Amiga 2000 using Deluxe Paint.

Before anyone asks (again): All artworks and animations for the game were hand-pixeled with a traditional PC mouse—no 3D was used.

worrying about autism, maybe kinda fedi meta related, long, PSA
Show content

As some of you may know, I am autistic. That brought me all sort of problems during my life because of misunderstandings (both mine and other people's). If I'm not forgetting anything, I haven't had that kind of problems in fedi so far. However I'm increasingly worried that I'm going to step on a mine by misunderstanding something or being misunderstood by someone.

I used to feel comfortable here because it seemed there's more autistic people on fedi than in other social networks. It's probably the case since were just a bunch of nerds. But I'm also noticing more and more events that could perfectly be explained by a failure of understanding a person. I'm not saying that it is what is happening, it's just that is likely.

Let me explain a typical nightmare scenario for an autistic person, which tend to happen a lot in our youth: Someone like a parent o a teacher is very mad at you. Maybe for saying or doing something. But usually you have NO IDEA what it is. Or if you happen to figure out what it is, you don't know WHY they got so mad. Any attempt of explaining makes things worse, because it looks like you did it on purpose! Imagine this happening many times while you grow up. In the end you probably end up learning to feel guilty without reason.

Society is FULL of unwritten rules that are so obvious to most people and yet it trips most autistic people. We are not stupid or too lazy to learn the rules. We hear the rules but they're in an alien language to us. Society needs to understand that we need some patience, we need someone pointing the obvious. Because it frequently happens that it's only obvious to you and not to us.

Also I'd like to mention that a very common myth about autistic people is that we don't feel empathy or emotions. Nothing could be further from the truth. We're very empathetic (apparently more than non autistic people on average). The trouble is, that our empathy is tuned to a very different wavelength than most people. So understanding others is something we have to LEARN and in most cases someone has to help TEACHING us. Otherwise we grow to the stereotype of autistic asshole that uses their autism as an excuse.

How does it relate to the meta? I see once again accusations against some people of being racist. I'm not claiming any of those accusations are legitimate or illegitimate, that's not the point, and I implore you to not put words in my mouth. I'm just mentioning that to explain one of the fears I have. I fear that many of us autistic people will never be taught when someone is unknowingly being racist before we commit the same mistake, and we're denied an explanation becase "we should have known", because "it's obvious", because "you have to be blind to not see it, obviously you're doing it on purpose and acting ignorant, you're not fooling anyone!".

Please, PLEASE, remember that people like us exist and don't automatically assume malice. Sometimes it's just that we didn't know, even if it sounds ridiculous to you. Point the obvious. Give us the opportunity to learn. If you care about don't forget about us. @actuallyautistic

Today i went to the opening of a new gym by my personal trainer who started his gym during covid, focused on personal attantion and rehabilitation for unhealthy food and livestyles through personallised all around plans. I have signed up by them around 5 months after they opened and still enjoy going there.

during his opening speech he got real emotional and the crowd was supportive of this. This is perhaps one of the best things that happened. So many times I have seen a man crying (fromjoy/or pain) played off as a joy. but this was just a human crying from achieving his dream through his will and enterpeuneurship and it was just accepted. I wish this was the norm and rather happy that it happened like this.

Here it is: the Finnish Parliament has sided against !

I am overjoyed that in their statement, they have outlined exactly what this proposal would entail: mass surveillance in Europe.

From their statement (translation by me):

"..the suggested model would, in fact, lead to the mass surveillance of communication and would weaken the integrity of communication in the EU."
