my hot take on keyboards is that if they have a "function" key, they're not big enough.

If you want to have a key do two things, simply put a second key somewhere to do that other thing

@foone what's your opinion of shift

like all those keyboards where F1 is "mute" and func-F1 is real F1?

just add another row of keys, and label them with your new multimedia commands

@foone
Early 2000s keyboards had the right idea when they had those weird sticky media control buttons on the top above the actual keyboard keys

I demand this even though I currently can't use keyboards over like 500g. Figure it out, science, make me a keyboard that is lightweight AND the size of a monotype keyboard

yes my ideal keyboard looks like this, why do you ask?

someday I'm gonna build a monotype panel (so half of this) and then solder like 5 of them together, with a rotating chair in the middle. I'll be able to type on 15 varieties of QWERTY at once

60% keyboard? You poor thing, that's not enough keys. I use a 1500% keyboard. I have individual keys that would require more than 10 fingers to press on your silly little incomplete keyboard

I push one carefully labeled key and my keyboard presses H-E-R-E-S-A-N-I-C-K-L-E-K-I-D-G-O-B-U-Y-A-R-E-A-L-K-E-Y-B-O-A-R-D

while I'm wishing about keyboards, I want USB HID 2.0 with a few features:
1. Keyboards can tell the connected PC what their layout is
2. Keyboards can tell what OS the connected PC is running (for use in determining layout of modifier keys)
3. Keyboards can send arbitrary unicode keystrokes, even if they don't have a key for that in their layout

@foone ...okay, so the different alphabets are for different typefaces? Bold, italic, that kind of thing?

@foone I have a theory you can probably use NumLock between two OS's to signal which OS it is at least. And you can probably also toggle NumLock (and caps lock and scroll lock?) in a particular way using a daemon on your host to send that info. Been thinking about trying it for my setup.

@sif it just seems like such a hack, though :(

@foone
iirc, The USB HID profile for keyboards is pretty much "Fancy PS2 keyboard"

@kirtai pretty much, yes. and bluetooth's HID specification is "idk, go look at what USB did"

@flammableengineering @dheadshot monotype! No linotypes allowed in my house

@foone
So, no shift keys then? Have both cases on the keyboard and all the symbols as their own keys?

@dheadshot @foone Double sided, lower case on one side, upper case on the other.

@Extelec @dheadshot ooh, now that's an idea. I should prototype that... probably by gluing two keyboards together

@foone @dheadshot You probably need feet on both sides to prevent accidental pressage, but cut me in when you make a $million :)

@Extelec @dheadshot this is a problem I've already dealt with for my cube keyboard

@krutonium different typefaces. (They might look similar on the keyboard because the keys don't have to match what it actually prints)
