I need a USB UPS.
my stupid steelseries mouse is REAL picky about the power, and unfortunately if it browns out, it gets disconnected and won't reconnect until you physically disconnect and reconnect the USB.

and unfortunately I'm using it through a flakey thunderbolt dock.

I'd solved it back when I could use a desktop by hooking up a USB power switch, so if my mouse ever disconnected I could just hit the switch twice to disconnect reconnect it, but now that I'm bedridden that's not really an option

I can disconnect my thunderbolt dock and reconnect it, but unfortunately this means windows decides that the second monitor is GONE FOREVER and therefore every window on it needs to be moved, asap

@foone Windows' idea of where windows should go and which monitor they should be on is shaky at best. My work NUC has a monitor connected via USB-C and one connected via HDMI and if it suspends and re-awakens it smushes all my windows onto the USB-C connected monitor.

@juliancalaby sometimes a edid emulator/hdmi dummy plug will fix that, I used that on my desktop

maybe if I get a powered USB hub and plug the mouse into that. I dunno. Even on a desktop this mouse disconnects sometimes

@foone This particular USB hub works with uhubctl to remotely control the power per port.

@jpm heh. aliexpress loads half that page, then notices I'm in the US, and then redirects to a 404

I don't like having to think this, but I wonder if there's a firmware update for my mouse

naturally it's a Gamer thing so if there is a firmware, I can't just download it and a flasher, it's a whole Experience app that runs all the time and manages RGB and all that crap

which, as a software preservationist, makes me itch

where do you get the firmware updates when the software goes away, because it's replaced or the company went out of business?

nowhere! they just evaporate, because you could only download them through the app

@foone yeah, i hate propietary garbageware to manage RGB. at least most of them have solutions via stuff like OpenRGB, though any of the fancy effects have to be done via plugins (and the only good plugin hasn't been updated to work with the latest versions despite the fact it's been broken for about a month now)

I'm intrigued at how they could have possibly made their app's usb device detection this slow.

nope, no firmware updates.

although I did find out how to do a factory reset on my mouse (AHHHHH)
1. unplug
2. hold left+right+cpi
3. plug in ,wait until LEDs flash

@foone Would that be more expensive than a new mouse, and is the specific mouse so indispensable that the cost is irrelevant?

@Novyx finding a usable mouse for me is very difficult (I'm very picky), so it probably makes sense, yeah

@wyatt counts per inch. movement sensitivity, basically

@foone can you cycle the power to the USB port it's on? not all ports have a soft power switch but hopefully on a fancy TB dock? on Linux you can use uhubctl to try this. or on Windows this person has made "RestartUsbPort":

@foone can't you use a power conditioner? that's a device meant for analog synths which are a little too sensitive to noise; it is basically a split cable that allows you to plug the data in your pc and the power/ground lines in an external power brick.
